The shot we undertook for this commercial was very challenging. It contained a complex track, repainting of parts of the background, re-animation of the background characters, rotoscoping of the foreground action and, of course, replacement of the car itself – the new C-Class for China.
It was obviously essential that our new car looked grounded in the environment. In order to achieve this we built a 3D sphere which incorporated buildings, racetrack and sky, as well as the pit-crew. Where possible we also mapped detail from the original car on to our 3D model.
The French version of this commercial needed to have parking bays painted on to the ground, to comply with French law.
This was a job for a planar tracker, using all of the irregularities or marks on the ground to follow - after that we laid out the parking bays and applied the tracking data.
Changes needed to be made to the car in this commercial to conform with the model sold in Belgium: the side indicators had to be removed, retaining the lighting and shade, as well as the dust and road debris.
This entire commercial is one CGI shot, which sometimes makes tracking a problem - in this case the substitution of the front panels worked out well.
There were a lot of short, sharp shots in this series of commercials for the C-Class Coupé – and they all needed different license plates, seatbelt positions, additional seatbelts, and a number of other minor modifications.
The brilliant sunlight flashing into the car interior made things more interesting as we gave the driver the seatbelt he needed and removed his pocket square.
The GLA is the latest offering in the Mercedes range: a 4x4 with strength and beauty, full of creativity.
The original commercial was shot using multiple passes of motion-control elements, with a transition through to a prototype car - the production car wasn't then available. Our task was to recreate the reveal shot in 3D using the CAD files of the production car and a newly selected section of the motion-control footage. From the CAD files we created 3D models of the car textured in stone and the photo-real production car, as well as the environment. Using 3D tracking data from the motion-control footage we matched the selected camera move and then composited our 3D elements to create the final shot.
Building on the 3D reconstruction of the GLA packshot we did for France earlier in the year, we were able to rework the shot for the Chinese market.
The GLA for China has a re-styled trim and a completely new front section, new wheels, new lights and new roof detail. Using the 3D file supplied by Mercedes we were able to incorporate the design changes into the existing commercial, retaining the lighting and tonality of our previous version.
The most challenging request we've had for a Mercedes commercial was to replace the front end of one of their cars for the Chinese market.
We had to start by remodelling the bumper, headlights, LED sidelights and wing panels in 3D. Once we had done that we tracked the new front end, lit the 3D renders to match the originals and finally composited the shots.
We also needed to remodel the rear bumper and exhaust system and replace them in several shots.
This commercial showed a Smart car, firstly off-road and out of its comfort zone - trying to ford the river and stalling - and then back in its element, showing a 4x4 how we park in the city.
The client needed fog lights added to the car, and supplied a number of publicity stills for reference.
